Menlo Park Academy will send several students to the regional Power of the Pen tournament after its teams excelled during last month’s district competition.
The seventh-grade team achieved first place in the team rankings.
Multiple students were also awarded individual honors at the writing event.
Four students on the seventh-grade team placed: Michelle Z. (1st place), Lexi S. (4th place), Ella Z. (5th place) and Miles M. (7th place). On the eighth-grade team, Kaela R. was awarded 1st place in the Best of Best round, as well as 7th place all-around, and Natasha D. earned 12th place.
Team faculty adviser Mrs. Tammi Belko says this is the best showing MPA has had in its five years of competing and she is expecting terrific things from her students at the regional competition in March.
The following students will be participating in the regional event: Ella K., Hannah M., Jasmine H., Kaela R., Lexi S., Michelle Z., Miles M., and Natasha D.
According to its website, Power of the Pen began as a nonprofit educational organization in 1989. It has grown exponentially, and today its competitions include participants from more than 80 counties in Ohio.
The writing tournaments are designed for students in grades 7 and 8. Young writers are given the opportunity to compete in three rounds of impromptu writing. In addition to receiving recognition and awards, the students are given immediate feedback about their written expression from teacher coaches and judges.
Qualifiers from the regional competition will move on to the state finals, which will occur at the College of Wooster on May 21-22, 2015.
Good luck to MPA’s competitors!
